Just as writing is part of the arts, so is music. If you know me, you know I have almost always have some genre of music playing or a podcast going on. While I love a lot of different genres (and I mean a lot), two that I have on quite often are classical music and instrumental music. Sure, they aren’t always as catchy as pop or 80s hits, but these genre’s are great for when you have to get stuff done and don’t want extra distractions.
So… Here’s four reasons you should listen to Instrumental or Classical music.

1. Studying
This is probably an obvious one for most people. It can be really difficult to get in a studying mood. Sometimes, when I finally am in study mode I find myself distracted by every little thing because it’s too quiet. Studying to classical or instrumental music really helps with that. There’s very few to no lyrics to distract you, but there’s enough background noise to fill the silence. It also creates a nice ambiance, especially if you’re in a library or coffee shop.

2. Writing
Ok, I know what you’re thinking. You’ll get the same benefits with writing as you would for studying. Yes that’s true, but there’s more! When you’re writing creatively you have to find ways to get the creative juices flowing. Sometimes it comes out naturally, but a lot of times it doesn’t, though it’s different for everyone. For me, I find that listening to classical music helps immensely. The more intense the music, the more I’m able to build a picture in my head to eventually translate to paper. There’s something inspirational in this genre of music that I haven’t found anywhere else. Whether you’re world building, journaling, blogging, or just giving writing a chance, I recommend giving a listen to some classical music.

3. Cooking
Have you ever over-measured and proceeded to dump that measurement into a pot or pan only to realize you might’ve just messed up a recipe because you were too busy singing? I thought so. Instrumental music will be your best friend. You can still listen to some of your favorite songs just without the words. That recipe is saved from disaster and so are your taste buds ;).

4. Walking
I saved the best for last. Picture with me here…
You’re on walk. The time of day doesn’t really matter, neither does the weather because what you’re listening to is dramatic classical music. It’s the type of music playing at the most dramatic part of a movie, where the lovers are ripped apart, a fan-favorite character dies, or the fight-scene is happening. It’s so intense you feel like you’re the main character…
Really, it is the best walking music. I have never walked faster or harder for no purpose than when I listened to dramatic classical music.
And there you have it, four reasons why you should listen to classical or instrumental music.
