Are We All Grown Here?

I’m a mystery/thriller the majority of the time. Seriously, if you look at my bookshelf that’s easily over half my books. Yet, from time to time, I stray from the genre in search of something new and different for me.

If you’re looking for a quick, fun, and humorous read, this one is for you. Grown Ups by Marie Aubert is a book that strayed from my normal genre and was worth it. The book was published in 2019, so it’s fairly new.

"Grown Ups' By Marie Aubert

When I picked up this book I’d only heard of the movie Grown Ups (2010). These are not the same thing.  I was, as I always am, drawn to the cover of the book. The bright blue and yellow caught my eye. The second is the quote on the front cover (they really knew how to pick ’em).

The novel follows a woman named Ida who is single, panicking, and trying to navigate where she’s at in life. Ida is not where she thought she would be at this point in her life and finds herself unsatisfied with her status. From the beginning, Aubert does a fantastic job of relating to her readers through the panic we all feel in life (especially the single ones).  We watch the story unfold from Ida’s inner monologue and her viewpoint of interactions with other characters. These other characters just so happen to be her family members.

Married and in motherhood, Ida’s sister has everything she wants but doesn’t have. As the sisters quarrel and their mother attempts to placate, their lives begin to unravel. Not only does Aubert nail sibling rivalry in a natural way, but she also does it in a chaotic way.

This book is the definition of a quick read. There are only 160 pages, aka if you’ve got time, you can easily read it in one sitting. This is yet another book I finished in one sitting with only minor interruptions from my dog.

I think this book is great for people interested in a lot of different genres; it’s a book that can appeal to many.

Send me a note of what to read next!
